Located in Nanjing (the capital of Jiangsu Province and “an ancient capital of six dynasties”), Nanjing Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (NITH) is a state-owned public full-time regular higher vocational college subordinated to Jiangsu Provincial Tourism Bureau. It was founded in 1978 along with the beginning of the reform and opening up, and the development of tourism, with its predecessors being the Tourism School of Jiangsu Province and Jinling Institute of Hotel Management Cadres. Reputed as the “cradle of tourism personnel in China” and “Huangpu Military School in Hotel Industry” (an incubator of elites for Chinese hotel industry), NITH is a member of “China Union of Five Tourism Institutes”, a national base for training senior management of hotels, and an initiator of Jiangsu Group of Tourism Vocational Education. NITH has been successively awarded such honorary titles as “A National Advanced Unit in the Tourism System”, “An Advanced Collective of Tourism in Jiangsu Province”, “A Safe and Peaceful Campus in Jiangsu Province”, “An Advanced School of International Educational Cooperation and Exchange in Jiangsu Province”, “An Advanced Collective of the Employment of College Graduates in Jiangsu Province” and “An Advanced Unit of Landscaping in Jiangsu Province”.
With mobile lake water, jagged trees and attractive statues, the unique architecture of NITH features the style of classic gardens south of the Yangtze River: the integration of ecology/campus and culture/landscape. The campus of NITH covers a total area of 426 mu (15mu=1hectare) and has a total building area of nearly 200 thousand square meters. NITH has excellent venue facilities and superior accommodation conditions. Its library now contains 300 thousand tangible books, over 30 thousand periodicals and magazines of various types, and over 100 thousand electronic books. NITH has one national base for practical training, two provincial bases for practical training, and 38 modernized rooms for experiments and training.
NITH now has over 6200 students recruited from 15 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities (including such provinces as Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Shandong, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hebei, Sichuan, Yunnan and Gansu, such autonomous regions as Guangxi and Xinjiang, and Chongqing Municipality). Based on the development pattern of “macro-tourism” and such core factors as “food, accommodation, travel, sightseeing, shopping and recreation”, NITH offers 25 specialties, including hotel management, tourism management, cabin service, culinary art and nutrition, tourism English, tourism Japanese and applied Korean, including two national specialties for key construction, two provincial clusters of specialties for key construction and two provincial characteristic specialties. NITH has nine teaching schools (departments) including School of Hotel Management, School of Tourism Management, School of Gastronomy and Nutrition, Department of Humanities and Art, Department of International Tourism, Section for the Teaching and Research of Ideological and Political Theory, Section for the Teaching of Military Theory Courses, Section of Fundamental Courses Teaching and School of Continuing Education, as well as Jinling Research Institute of Tourism Planning, Hospitality Research Institute, Research Institute of Gastronomy and Nutrition, Research Institute of Vocational Education for Tourism, Studio of Tourism Media and Hotel Management Company. NITH has three provincial excellent courses and three provincial excellent textbooks, has been awarded a first-prize of “Educational and Teaching Achievements in Jiangsu Province”, and has completed and undertaken more than 30 research projects at or above the provincial level.
NITH boasts a powerful team of professional teachers, most of whom have ever engaged in advanced studies in well-known tourism colleges/universities abroad or served as intermediate or senior managers in tourism enterprises, and 95% of whom are double-professionally-titled teachers. Among the full-time teachers of NITH, holders of senior technical titles account for 23%, holders of master/doctor degrees account for 67%, and there is one national master of culinary culture, two national star-raters of tourist hotels, 12 provincial star-raters of tourist hotels and certified advisory experts, five food & beverage trainers of Golden Key Hotels of the World (China),
12 national senior examiners/evaluators for vocational skill appraisal, four assessment experts for Grade A scenic spots, one third-level trainee for the “333 project” of Jiangsu Province, two academic leaders of “Qing Lan Project” of Jiangsu Province, and three key teachers of “Qing Lan Project” of Jiangsu Province. They have been playing an important role in vocational skill training, competitions in different industries, professional consultancy, scientific research and social services.
NITH has always been adhering to the schooling philosophy of “dedication to services and orientation to employment”, and attaching importance to cooperation in schooling, education, employment and development. By closely and intensively cooperating with enterprises in different industries, NITH has set up its training bases in more than 100 five-star hotels and high-end tourism enterprises at home and abroad, e.g. Royal Floridian Resort and Disneyland in USA, Hakone Yumoto Hotel Tokyo in Japan, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, famous Burj Al Arab in Dubai and Ferrari Theme Park (the biggest indoor park in the world) in Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates, the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong and InterContinental Hotels, Shangri-La Hotels and Sheraton Hotels distributed in the pan-Yangtze River Delta and the pan-Pearl River Delta. The graduates of NITH have a high rate of employment (above 99%), a high degree of professional counterparts and a high potential of development. Most of them have been working at high-end posts. These graduates are spread in high-end service industries at home and abroad, including five-star hotels, top 100 travel agencies, high-class scenic areas, airline companies, airports, express trains, banks, telecommunication companies and real-estate enterprises.
学院坚持精致化、专业化、特色化、国际化的办学方向，不断创新人才培养模式。以专科层次职业教育为主体，推进中等高等职业教育 “3+3” 人才培养衔接；发展“专接本”学历教育和境外高校延伸的“2+2”本科教育；做大、做强服务行业企业的职业培训。学院作为江苏省首批中高职衔接现代职教改革试点学校，实施“十大衔接计划”，与江宁中专、浦口中专、高淳中专、南京工程高等学校在考试、招生、学制、专业、课程、质量评价等方面进行衔接，打通技术技能人才培养发展通道。学院与南京师范大学、南京航空航天大学、南京财经大学、南京信息工程大学等合作举办“专接本”2+2本科班，专业涉及旅游管理、英语、商贸英语、会计、公共关系、电子政务等。同时，与美国普渡大学、夏威夷太平洋大学，加拿大温哥华岛大学，澳大利亚安格力斯学院，新西兰威尔瑞基理工学院，韩国全州大学、日本成溪学院等国外高校合作办学，通过2+2等合作方式出国学习，获得本校专科文凭和国家教育部认可的国外本科文凭。此外，还与台湾高雄餐旅大学、万能科技大学结为友好学校，每届赴境外交流、学习的学生比例近20%，拓展了学生的国际化视野和世界眼光。学院本着关注市场变化和切合企业内需的理念，为饭店集团、管理公司、连锁企业、饭店协会及旅游景区（点）、旅行社等量身定制培训课程包，提供定制化、菜单式诊断培训服务，年培训人数近6000人，服务社会的能力大幅提升。
NITH has been continuously innovating its model of personnel training by adhering to elaborate, professionalized, characterized and internationalized schooling. With its focus on vocational college education, NITH has been trying to link the “3+3” personnel training of its secondary with higher vocational education, develop its diploma-oriented “higher-vocational-to-undergraduate education” and its “2+2” undergraduate education extended to overseas institutions of higher learning, and strengthen and reinforce the vocational training oriented to enterprises in service industries. As one of the first pilot reform schools for linking secondary and higher vocational education with modern vocational education in Jiangsu Province, NITH has been carrying out “ten linking plans”: linking itself with Jiangning Technical Secondary School, Pukou Technical Secondary School, Gaochun Technical Secondary School and Nanjing Engineering Vocational College in aspects of examination, recruitment, school system, specialties, courses and quality assessment, so as to open up the development channel for the training of technical and skilled personnel. In cooperation with Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing Aeronautics and Astronautics University, Nanjing University of Finance and Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, NITH has been offering “higher-vocational-to-undergraduate education” 2+2 undergraduate courses, covering such specialties as tourism management, English, business English, accounting, public relations and e-government. Furthermore, NITH has been offering education in cooperation with foreign institutions of higher learning, including Purdue University (USA), Hawaii Pacific University (USA), Vancouver Island University (Canada), William Angliss Institute (Australia), Willrockey Institute of Science and Technology (New Zealand), Jeoniu University (South Korea), Seikei University (Japan) . Through the cooperation mode of “2+2”, students can study abroad and obtain higher vocational college diploma of our institute and foreign undergraduate diploma approved by the Ministry of Education of China. In addition, NITH has forged a “sister school” relationship with National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism and Vanung University in Taiwan. Nearly 20% of students of NITH can go abroad for exchange and study, thus broadening their internationalized and cosmopolitan view. With the philosophy of paying attention to market changes and catering to domestic demands of enterprises, NITH has tailored training course packages for and has been offering customized and menu-style diagnostic training services to hotel groups, management companies, chain enterprises, hotel associations and scenic areas/spots and travel agencies. By training nearly 6,000 people every year, NITH has considerably upgraded its ability to serve the society.
NITH has been continuously deepening the reform to its education and teaching, and stepping up its efforts in upgrading its connotations. Based on students’ vocational cultivation, NITH has being offering a special educational course entitled One-Week Cultivation; reinforcing the training over students’ ability to apply foreign languages, and promoting Hierarchical Foreign-language Teaching; exploring and practicing the practical teaching method of Four-axle Linkage and the Sandwich Teaching Model; developing the personnel training system of “dual education”; continuously perfecting several models of personnel training which combine learning with working, including “cultivation according to orders”, “alternation of learning and working”, “2+1” paid internship, “teaching-operation integration”, “task-driven”, and “project-guided learning“. In this way, NITH has brought up a large batch of excellent talents with a noble character, a high vocational quality, a strong ability of learning and practice, a high innovative and enterprising spirit, and a high skill of management, communication and development. They can not only meet the demand of social and economic development, but also are highly applauded by the society, enterprises and industries.
